Willie F. Thompson was born in Crenshaw County, Alabama, to the late Bishop and Vilettie Bodiford Thompson. He was one of eleven children, a cherished part of a large and loving family.
Willie “Rag” Thompson cherished sixty‑seven years with his late wife, Mary Nell, whom he affectionately called “Scoot.” Together, they worked hard to build a comfortable and stable life. Mary Nell retired from Timken Roller Bearing in Canton, Ohio, and Rag retired from Republic Steel Company in Massillon, Ohio. Over the years, they purchased several rental homes and enjoyed traveling together.
Rag found joy in fishing with his brothers, watching and discussing sports, gardening, and spending time with family.
Growing up during the Great Depression shaped many of his habits. Like some who lived through that era, he held onto things, and his siblings lovingly nicknamed him “King Clutter.”
Rag was a kindhearted man who never hesitated to help those truly in need. He helped raise several of his nephews and supported his parents in caring for his younger siblings. If one word could define Rag, it would be “frugality”—a quality he lived by with pride and purpose.
Rag leaves to cherish his memory: Elisha Thompson; James T. (Hope) Thompson; Merdis Bray, a sister of his father; Ozie Franklyn.
Not to be forgotten are his devoted nieces Andrea/Merqua, and his nephews Sedrick and Bruce. He is also survived by two loving sisters‑in‑law: Evelyn Byrd; and Ogeary Thompson.
Space and time will not allow us to name everyone who offered loving assistance and support, but please know that you are not forgotten. A multitude—and truly, a multitude—of nephews, nieces, cousins, friends, and extended family shared in Rag’s life and cared for him deeply.
Visitation will take place Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Paquelet Funeral Home. A funeral service will begin at 12:00pm with burial to follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
