Richard T. Smith, a devoted family man and respected member of the Massillon community, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026. Born on April 1, 1940, Richard lived a life marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for those closest to him.
Richard attended Timken High School, where he laid the foundation for a strong work ethic that would carry him through his 30 years of employment with the Timken Steel Company. His commitment to his profession was unwavering, and he earned the respect of colleagues and friends alike for his skill and reliability.
His sense of duty extended beyond the workplace. From 1957 to 1959, Richard proudly served in the Army, demonstrating his patriotism and dedication to his country during a formative period of his life. This chapter contributed to the man he became—steadfast, disciplined, and honorable.
Those who knew Richard remember him as a man who truly cherished his family. He enjoyed the simple pleasure of fishing, often finding peace and contentment by the water’s edge. His genuine love and devotion were evident in every interaction with his loved ones.
Richard is lovingly survived by his wife of 42 years, Rita Smith, who stood by his side with unwavering support. He is also remembered fondly by his children: daughters Karen (Robert) Snyder and Deborah (Rob) Hildreth, and son Woodrow (Tammy) T. Smith. Additionally, his step-son Michael (Angela) Owens. Richard’s bond with his siblings remains strong, as he is survived by his brother Clayton Smith and sisters Bonnie Piper and Helen Maruna. His extended family includes numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were enriched by his presence in their lives.
Richard was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Aurelia and Clayton Smith, as well as siblings Virginia Strasser and James Smith.
In remembering Richard T. Smith, we recall a man who embodied integrity, love, and dedication—a cherished father, husband, son, brother, and friend whose legacy will be carried forward by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
