Ray Fortner left this world on March 3, 2026, much as he lived—fighting, loving, fiercely protective of his family, and surrounded by them until the very end.
Ray was born on April 5, 1938, the third son of Gilbert and Elizabeth Fortner. The family spent their lives in Navarre, Ohio, in a home that loved the Lord, family, and community. Ray continued these traditions when he married the love of his life, Nancy. Together they raised three sons and a daughter.
In addition to his love of football, hunting, fishing, and politics, Ray cherished his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and shared a special bond with each of them. He enjoyed his years in the classroom, on the sidelines, and as a high school administrator, retiring as principal of Massillon Perry High School, where students and players revered him. His love of biology extended beyond the classroom to his gardening and the care of his many apple trees.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Nancy; his parents; his brother Richard and Richard’s wife, Lillian; his brother Glenn; and his brother- and sister-in-law, Fred and Dottie Abraham.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his sons, Brian (Susan), Mark (Donna), and Craig (Laura), and his daughter, Beth, his nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his brother-in-law, David Thompson (Peggy), and sister-in-law, Linda Fortner (Glenn), numerous nephews and nieces, as well as his church and community of friends.
As per Ray’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service will be held at a later date, with details to be announced.
