Jim Halter, 81, of Jackson Township passed away on July 9, 2025, at Amherst Meadows following an extended illness. He was born April 10, 1944, to the late Nicholas and Bernice (Shafrath) Halter.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Mary Ellen (Tatka) Halter; daughters, Kathryn (Bob) Fortman, Karen Halter, Kristina (Mark) Blake; grandchildren, Alex and Emma Fortman and Ethan and Connor Blake; and siblings, Maryann (Dan) Murray, Jeanne Balawajder, Ken (Barb) Halter, Donna (Rich) Conaway, Marcie (Dan) Otto, Mark (Connie) Halter, Maureen (Doug) Heller and Monica (Alan) Scott.
Jim was a 1962 graduate of Jackson High School. He began farming as a young boy, and it quickly became his lifelong passion. Alongside his farming life, he spent 32 years with East Ohio Gas Company, retiring in 2000. Jim was a proud member of the Ohio Farm Bureau for over 50 years, serving two terms as president. He was also actively involved with the Stark Soil and Water Conservation District for more than four decades, including 20 years as a respected member of the board.
Above all, Jim was a beloved husband, dad, and grandpa whose love for his family was unwavering. He cherished his church community, his farming neighbors, and a wide circle of extended family and friends. He will be remembered for his big heart, gentle humor, and strong work ethic.
The family would like to thank the staff of Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital Rehab, Amherst Meadows and Crossroads Hospice for their help and compassion.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm and Monday, July 21, 2025, from 9:00 am – 10:00 am at the Paquelet Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 11:00 am at Divine Mercy Parish, St. Mary’s, Massillon. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
