Gregory I. Mayberry

Gregory I. Mayberry, passed away on March 17, 2026.

Born in Warren, Ohio September 28,1927, Gregory I. Mayberry prayed to see the Sacred Heart of Jesus during the last days of his earthly life. He was acutely aware his mind was failing him, but it did not fail when it came to prayer. He could still easily recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, Eternal Rest Prayer, and his childhood favorite, Angel of God. We rejoice in the elation he must have felt when he left to join Our Lord and his beloved, Dorothy.

Greg graduated from Clinton High School and attended the University of Akron. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity where he enjoyed playing on their undefeated intramural basketball team.

Greg married “the most beautiful woman I ever saw”, his wife Dorothy, at St. George Catholic Church in Clinton, Ohio in 1951. They purchased a home on the tree lined street Mom always admired in Canal Fulton where they were able to raise their five children directly across the street from their church, SS Philip and James. There he joined the Holy Name Society, the troop committee of Boy Scout Troop 15, and devoted every Wednesday evening to working at bingo to cover tuition for their children to attend SS Philip and James School. He then so enjoyed the camaraderie of the other fathers with cigars, beer, and a lively card game after bingo. In his later years, he formed lasting friendships within Community of the Word at the church.

Greg spent the entirety of his career with the Ohio Brass company which later became Harvey Hubbel. His roles included chief draftsman, engineering secretary, then retired in 1993 as the office manager of the Frank B. Black Research Center in Wadsworth, Ohio.

Greg loved the Canal Fulton Community and its history. He served on Canal Fulton’s Village Council and as Clerk Treasurer. An avid reader, this led to being on the board of the library as well. He sought to preserve local history by serving on the board of trustees of the Canal Fulton Heritage Society. He gave countless hours to restore and display St. Helena II, repair and maintain St. Helena III, Oberlin Museum, William Blank House, and the McLaughlin Dry Dock. The restoration of a surrey was a pet project as he “slowed down” in his 80’s. When he stepped down from his position on the Heritage Society at 88, the board honored him with a certificate stating their appreciation; “The years you have worked here have been marked by unsurpassed efficiency and excellence. You have been an inspiration to us all.”

Greg was so proud of his military service in the United States Army during the Korean War. This included a tour of duty in the Army signal corps. When discharged, he was a radar maintenance technician. He was a life member of VFW Post 9795 in Canal Fulton.

Fitting with his insatiable curiosity and love of learning, Greg took courses in gemology and welding. He studied and then dabbled in beekeeping, fly fishing, and cross-country skiing. Well-versed in antiques, you could always find him at an auction and then relishing in the profit he could make selling his finds at a local flea market. His wife finally had to put her foot down and insist he bring nothing home that he couldn’t fit in his pocket. This led to years of researching, buying, and selling marbles.

His wife Dorothy (Moore), passed in 2007. Greg was also preceded in death by his sons Brian and Dennis Mayberry, his brother Thomas Mayberry, seven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

He will be deeply missed by his daughter Carolyn (Chuck) Kull, son Daniel (Susan) Mayberry, daughter Kathleen (Joseph) Hinton, daughter-in-law Bertille (Dennis) Mayberry, 19 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and his dear friend Kathy McConnell.

Family will receive friends on Monday, March 23, 2026 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Paquelet Funeral Home, Massillon.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 pm at SS. Philip and James Catholic Church, Canal Fulton on March 24, 2026.
