Don G. Mathias, a dedicated family man and an accomplished individual, passed away on February 8, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on November 23, 1929, Don lived a life filled with passion and commitment, leaving a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Don had many jobs throughout his life, including Over Head Crane Operator at Warner and Swasey and later at Reeves Steel Mill. His drive and entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish family businesses, including Mathias Raceway, Mathias Cycle Shop, where he sold bikes, and Mathias Sales and Service, where he showcased his mechanical skills and offered motorcycle sales and repair services.
His love for family was a cornerstone of his life. Don is survived by three daughters, one brother, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandsons, all of whom he cherished deeply and took great pride in.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucille Mathias, as well as his parents, Hugo Mathias and Mary Mathias.
Beyond his career, Don pursued a variety of hobbies and interests that highlighted his adventurous spirit. After turning 50, he earned his pilot's license and enjoyed flying small planes. He had a keen interest in guns, enjoying skeet shooting and indoor target shooting, and dedicated time to repairing firearms. Even in his later years, he maintained his independence, mowing his grass until fall of 2025. He loved sitting in the sun, watching the world go by, and greeting drivers with a friendly wave.
Don was also a lifelong fan of motocross; he raced motorcycles for many years and participated in events at the Daytona Speedway, as well as driving in Short Track, 1/2 mile, and Scrambles.
Don G. Mathias will be remembered not only for his achievements and interests but most importantly for the love he had for his family, which defined his life and left a precious legacy.
